This online training course covers a wide range of topics relating to basic medical gas training within the healthcare industry, such as bulk oxygen storage systems, use of analgesic gas and use of oxygen. The course will take approximately one hour to complete, and at the end of the training there are a number of multiple choice questions based on the course content, which must be answered correctly to pass the course.
Remember under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and HTMO2 guidelines, it is the responsibility of employers to train employees on the recommended safeguards relating to the handling of medical gases, to ensure they understand and employ safe practices. Maintain their own appropriate levels of training as identified through the training matrix, and ensure they are trained and authorised to undertake the task they are about to perform.


It is important to ensure medical gas equipment has been visually checked before use and remove any defective equipment from use immediately, label it as faulty, decontaminate and send to the relevant department in the organisation.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Correctly be able to identify gas cylinders
  2. Recognise how different cylinders operate
  3. Have an awareness of flammability hazards
  4. Be able to identify correct gas control equipment
  5. Be aware of safe cylinder management
  6. Be able to undertake risk assessments when using gas cylinders
  7. Recognise the hazards of using incorrect manual handling techniques
  8. Understand the importance of appropriate storage facilities in line with safe working practices
  9. The basic principles of oxygen administration and use.

At the end of the training there are a number of multiple choice questions, based on the course content, which must be answered correctly to pass. If you answer any of the questions incorrectly, you are given the opportunity to retake the course and successfully complete the test to receive your certificate. There is no time limit on completing this course
