The Safeguarding Adults Module covers recognizing abuse indicators, taking action, understanding legislation, defining harm, providing advocacy, recognizing roles, referring to social care, documenting concerns, maintaining records, sharing information, understanding guidance, and recognizing radicalization risk factors, ensuring effective safeguarding for adults.

Safeguarding Adults Level 1 and 2 Module

a) Recognizing Potential Indicators of Abuse, Harm, and Neglect:

  • Understanding different forms of abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, financial, neglect)
  • Identifying signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect
  • Recognizing indicators specific to vulnerable adults (e.g., older adults, individuals with disabilities)

b) Taking Action if There Are Concerns:

  • Knowing the reporting procedures within the organization
  • Identifying appropriate individuals to report concerns to (e.g., line manager, safeguarding lead, local authority)
  • Seeking advice from relevant professionals (e.g., social workers, police, healthcare professionals)

c) Basic Knowledge of Relevant Legislation:

  • Understanding the key legislation and policies related to safeguarding adults in the UK (e.g., Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005, Human Rights Act)
  • Familiarity with the roles and responsibilities outlined in the legislation

d) Understanding Harm, Abuse, and Neglect:

  • Defining harm, abuse, and neglect in the context of safeguarding adults
  • Identifying signs and indicators of harm, abuse, and neglect
  • Understanding the impact of harm, abuse, and neglect on individuals

e) Providing Effective Advocacy:

  • Recognizing the importance of advocacy in safeguarding adults
  • Understanding the legislation and professional guidance related to advocacy
  • Knowing how to provide advocacy support in cases involving mental capacity or communication issues

f) Professional Role, Responsibilities, and Boundaries:

  • Understanding the role of healthcare workers in a multidisciplinary team and multi-agency setting
  • Recognizing professional boundaries and knowing when to seek support from colleagues or other professionals

g) Referring to Social Care:

  • Knowing when and how to make a referral to social care
  • Following organizational policies and procedures for reporting safeguarding concerns

h) Documenting Safeguarding Concerns:

  • Understanding the importance of accurate and timely documentation
  • Knowing how to report safeguarding concerns in a format that informs relevant staff and agencies appropriately

i) Maintaining Appropriate Records:

  • Differentiating between fact and opinion when documenting safeguarding concerns
  • Understanding the importance of maintaining confidentiality and data protection

j) Sharing Information with Other Teams:

  • Identifying relevant and appropriate information to share with other professionals or teams involved in safeguarding adults
  • Understanding the importance of information sharing in safeguarding processes

k) Key Statutory and Non-Statutory Guidance and Legislation:

  • Familiarity with key legislation and guidance related to safeguarding adults (e.g., Mental Capacity Act, Human Rights Act)
  • Understanding the implications of these laws and guidance for safeguarding practices

l) Risk Factors for Radicalization and Preventive Action:

  • Understanding the risk factors for individuals being drawn into terrorist-related activity
  • Knowing who to contact for preventive action and support for those at risk of radicalization

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Recognize potential indicators of abuse, harm, and neglect.
  2. Know what action to take if there are concerns, including who to report concerns to and seek advice from.
  3. Have a basic knowledge of the relevant legislation related to safeguarding adults.
  4. Understand what constitutes harm, abuse, and neglect and be able to identify signs of these in relation to safeguarding adults in the UK.
  5. Ensure effective advocacy is provided where required, in line with legislation and professional guidance, especially for individuals with mental capacity or communication issues.
  6. Identify professional roles, responsibilities, and boundaries, as well as those of colleagues in a multidisciplinary team and multi-agency setting in safeguarding adults.
  7. Know how and when to refer to social care in accordance with organizational policies if an adult safeguarding concern is identified.
  8. Document safeguarding concerns in a format that appropriately informs relevant staff and agencies.
  9. Know how to maintain appropriate records, including differentiating between fact and opinion, in relation to safeguarding adults.
  10. Identify the appropriate and relevant information and know how to share it with other teams.
  11. Understand key statutory and non-statutory guidance and legislation, including the Human Rights Act and mental capacity legislation, in the UK.
  12. Be aware of the risk factors for radicalization and know who to contact regarding preventive action and supporting individuals who may be at risk of or drawn into terrorist-related activity.
